Bangkok Revenge (2011) is not a great film. It is disjointed, tonally uneven, and populated with cardboard antagonists. But it is a necessary film for students of action cinema. It represents a moment when Thai filmmakers, having exhausted the Buddhist mysticism of Ong-Bak , tried to graft Korean revenge tropes onto their own volatile urban landscape. The release preserves this film as it should be seen: sharp enough to admire the stunt work, gritty enough to forgive the melodrama, and loud enough to feel every broken bone. Jon Foo’s silent, painless avenger remains a tragic figure—not because he avenges his parents, but because he realizes, in the final frame, that revenge has cured nothing.
