Mohanlal was born to Kumaradatta and Sridevi, and he grew up in Kerala. He developed an interest in acting at a young age and was active in his school's drama club. After completing his schooling, Mohanlal moved to Chennai to pursue a career in acting. He began with small roles in Tamil and Malayalam films, eventually landing his breakthrough role in the 1980 film "Thiranu."
