The story is set in Monstropolis, a city powered by the screams of human children. The city's largest employer, , employs "scarers" who enter the human world through magical closet doors. The film follows James P. Sullivan (Sulley), the top scarer, and his best friend/assistant Mike Wazowski, as they accidentally bring a human child named Boo into the monster world—a place where children are considered toxic and deadly.
