Atlantis: Milo’s Return is less a traditional cinematic sequel and more a salvaged project. Following the disappointing box office performance of the original Atlantis: The Lost Empire , Disney canceled a planned high-budget sequel titled Shards of Chaos and a spin-off television series called Team Atlantis .
To recoup costs, Disney took three nearly finished TV episodes and stitched them together with new bridging animation.
