Composed in 2012, The Long Road (originally titled Tāls ceļš ) was born from a collaboration with the renowned youth choir (Youth Choir of the Latvian Radio). Ešenvalds set a poignant text by the American poet Sara Teasdale (1884–1933).

While often performed a cappella, it frequently incorporates unique "susurrations" of sound using descant recorders tin whistles to create an evanescent, shimmering effect.
