Mekeilah — Love Work

The story begins on the first day of her junior year. Mekeilah walks into Cypress Bend High, her locs pinned up in a careful bun, silver rings on every finger. She hands a teacher a tissue before the teacher even realizes she’s about to cry over a broken coffee thermos. She lends her calculator to a boy who’d made fun of her braids in middle school. She smiles through it all.

She doesn't walk away. Instead, she turns to the crowd and says, “Someone else get the nurse. Someone else hold her hand. I’ve done enough.” mekeilah love

Mekeilah's journey to stardom wasn't easy, however. Like many young artists, she faced numerous rejections and setbacks, which could have easily discouraged her. But Mekeilah's determination and resilience kept her going, driving her to work tirelessly towards her goals.
